Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008
A bill to provide for a program of temporary extended unemployment compensation.
This bill would provide 20 more weeks of unemployment insurance benefits to those who exhausted their benefits within the past year and are still unemployed. In states with exceptionally high unemployment, it would provide for an additional 13 weeks of benefits. It would also increase all individual benefits by $50 per week.
This bill has been replaced by new legislation - H.R.6867 and S.3507 - that may be voted on when the Senate returns in November for a lame duck session.

Can anyone help me????? I am trying to find information on the unemployment extension that bush is trying to pass in 2008.
Bush approved the extension yesterday.
I think the sun has set on Bush trying to do anything. Saidly the past 7 years have been a part of history many will not forget. Pray for 1-29-09 to come quickly.
Can anyone help us or see what's going on?
My wife and I, Once happy middle class citizens are now both unemployed in Oregon due to lay offs, poor economy. I never thought our country could get this bad financially. It brings me to tears. An extension of benefits would buy me a little more time in hopes that we can find work before things get unthinkably worse for my family. I would rather have a job than an extension but I don't know where else to look. No one is hiring and even the positions that pay half of what I used to make, do not want to take a chance on hiring someone that will leave for more money eventually. For one opening, companies are getting thousands of applications. I am 43 and I do not remember a time that our country was in this bad of shape financially.
My husband and I have both been layed off in the past four months and have been diligently but unsuccessfully looking for work. Our unemployment compensation doesn't even pay for our fixed expenses and we are withdrawing from savings every month to live. My benefits expire in six weeks and I don't know what we'll do without those to get us through until we find employment. Please extend these for hard working, motivated Americans to get through this dire period.

you posted a comment on the said bill?
Bush is rejecting this bill, not trying to pass it.
Bush opposed extensions of unemployment benefits which would have been included with the economic stimulus package.
There will be no extensions.
I hope someone else will enjoy my house as well as I did.
Stimulus package too far too late for the people who really need it, damage is already done to credit worked hard to build.
Yeah, me too..... however I am sure all is cozy and warm at the Whitehouse!!
I worked for years to get my home, and all the equity, GONE!!
I cannot even get a basic job to make ends meet, I am overqualified!! For what?? I want to work, and keep my house, but NO!!
Some one else will enjoy your house as much as you did. Like someone enjoyed my house two years ago when i lost it after going thru all my savings and 401K, and still owe the government for the taxes on the 401K to stay alive. The people that took my house are now out of that house due to no work also. So either the rich will keep getting rich by taking our homes or the government will step in and give us this unemployment extension we need. I am out of work again and broke. I will have to move to Washington soon and live on the steps and eat the crumbs left behind from Congress. Our government does'nt help single men. I wish I could get Pregnate and get everything Free. Oh I forgot, I am a Man.
My unemployment runs out in 3 weeks, are there any talks that the unemployment will be extended in the near future, or is it a dead issue now? I live in an area where unemployment is high. Its been hard to find a job. If I loose my unemployment before I find a job, I may be out on the street.
I know how you feel. I have not interviewed for any job that had less than 100 resumes submitted!
I'm in the same position in Northern NJ. Something is very wrong out there. I've submitted about 100 resumes and not one phone call. Good luck.
A lot of us have run out of unemployment benefits. My area is which has had its housing related industries devastated by the mortgage problems. So the unemployment here is high.
Based on conversations with others who have been unemployed for months, I'm guessing that Baby Boomers are in for a long haul. Our local paper recently contained an article titled "Retaining the Talented Young".
I don't think the issue is dead, it just didn't get in with the stimulus package. I think they are going to revisit it. It is my hope as well - my benefits end in a month. I've never been this long without a job in 20 years. Very frustrating that they didn't include it in the stimulus package.
I have been laid off of my job after 29 years of working for a company, and because of my age [57] it will take longer for me to find a job. I really hope that this bill gets passed so that I can have help supporting my family and paying the utility bills. I have been tracking it, and am frustrated that not more has been done with it. It also seems to me that it is taking at least a year for people 57 and older to find quality work. I think these are issues that politicians need to know.
**When you go gray, they want you to go away..... SO help us if that is the case, because we have famalies and children to support. I personally have been paying into the system since I was 15. REach back and extend my unemployment benefits.
I am a social worker and most utility companies have plans if you do not have an income. CALL them and also check with you Community Action agency and call your state Department of Development for help.
I know how you feel, older workers have a very hard time finding employment. I have worked in the building industry for the last 10 years, here in Calif it is a dead deal we are totally dried up. The bank where I worked was bought out and lay off have been going on since 08/2007. I was in the 1st group, management. Now my benefits have been exhausted and I keep hoping something will happen, I turn 61 in April but still have an active brain function. I need that extension.
REACH BACK AND ALLOW UNEMPLOYMENT TO BE COLLECTED BY THOSE WHOSE BENEFITS HAVE RUN OUT. IF PEOPLE HAVE NOT WORKED SINCE LAST MAY AND THEIR BENEFITS HAVE RUN OUT, AND THEY ARE STILL NOT ABLE TO FIND WORK, ALLOW THEM A TEMPORARY EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

This bill was blocked by the republicans with the help of Nancy Pelosi. I was thinking of voting republican if there was a good candidate for President. This has switched my position to straight democrat. I hope that eveyone out there whos benefits will end will find jobs. It's getting harder everyday. Good luck.
So is there still hope that unemployment benefits may be extended? Or is this a dead deal? I just ran out of my benefits and it's getting scary!
No, It's not dead yet. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the house said this is an issue that could be looked at after the stimulus package was approved. She didn't want it held up. (Missed by one vote). Congress is back in session and I would hope that this item would be first on their agenda.
I agree. I have been laid off now since August, but had a severance package. I worked in the mortgage industry as an underwriter, and there is NOTHING out there for me. I just started Nursing school, and am through the 1st semester. My unemployment will run out next month. If I do not find something I am screwed!!. I hope they extend them, and SOON!!!
My benefits ran at the end of October of last year and still no job and it's definetly not for the lack of trying. I've already lost my home to forecloser and am living with my parents at the age of 40.. An extension through the winter months would be so helpful..
My husband was laid off after 28 yrs of service to the same company on his 60th birthday. He has been to one job interview in the past one year after interviews with several head hunters and applying to thousands of companies. For those high priced consultants to the bill who believe that the passing of this bill would be a deterent to the unemployed from seeking jobs i would like to invite them to walk in his shoes for atleast a day.I hope that the bill will be passed.
I was laid-off in April of 2007 from my job of 7 years and my benefits ran out in November. I have a 2 year old son and another child due in April. I have gone back to school full-time and search for a job daily to no avail so far. I fell like the Democrats could have pushed harder for this, but the Republicans will surely pay a steep price in November for their unwillingness to help people in desperate situations who have paid into the system their entire lives.
i am 8 month pregnant and stopped recieveing unemployment at the beginning of January..... i have a car note, car insurance, a warrenty, and bills due....... idk y in the hell it is so hard to pass a bill that if not passed places congress in a bad position with the people who voted the in office..... the U.S. citizens...... i am deparate for money and cry every day worrying about the future of my unborn child.... i need advice..... Anyone please email me: islandjuicyfruit@gmail.com thanks
Wouldn't you think giving extensions to those thousands of unemployed, whose benefits have run out within the last 6 months put money into the economy faster then the rebates that won't be here until atleast mid-may?
